Seeing a board certified ophthalmologist (MD) differs from optometrists. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who spend four years in medical school, during which two years include work in clinics, surgical suites, and hospital wards. They then spend four years in residency, working in eye clinics and developing their skill in the OR. As medical doctors, they are qualified to diagnose medical conditions that manifest in the eyes and visual system such as diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure.
